Recap: INIOAS and SKLEC Scientists Joint Workshop Held on January 27-28

The two-day online scientists’ joint workshop, held on January 27-28, 2024, was organized by the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography and Atmospheric Science (INIOAS) and the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC, East China Normal University). This joint workshop was co-hosted by Dr. Maryam Ghaemi (INIOAS, SCOR 2023 Visiting Scholar to SKLEC) and Prof. Jing Zhang (SKLEC, IMBeR National Contact for China). With the theme of “Developing International Capacity,” the joint workshop covered a range of topics from novel ocean sampling observation tools and equipment developments to the evaluation of health and the impact of climate change on the Persian Gulf, Caspian Sea, and Indian Ocean, while more than 40 scientists attended. Prof. Ali Mehdinia, Deputy for Research and Education of INIOAS, and Prof. Qing He, Director of SKLEC, welcomed all participants.

This joint workshop consisted of twelve academic presentations, covering a diverse array of topics shaping marine research. From unraveling the complexities of acidification and hypoxia in the Persian Gulf, the status of coral reefs, dynamics of saltwater intrusion, and paleoceanographic reconstructions of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, to employing innovative methodologies such as remote sensing and machine learning for coastal data analysis. Alongside studies on ocean biogeochemistry, trace elements, microplastics, and macrobenthos, collaboration opportunities, and international projects will also be explored.

Prof. GiHoon Hong, IMBeR Strategy Director, suggested an international initiative targeting the Persian Gulf and Northwest Indian Ocean region. He delved into the impacts of climate change and human dimensions on hydrological processes, such as warming trends, physical geography alterations, wind system dynamics, desalination operations, and oil and gas extraction activities. He further proposed strengthening regional networks of excellence centers to complement each other and to ensure longer-term (>10 years) collaboration.

The workshop concluded by noting that the Persian Gulf and Northwest Indian Ocean are waiting for a full-scale scientific investigation from global communities. INIOAS and SKLEC scientists contemplated an international project to identify the gaps in scientific knowledge of the regional seas and to develop innovative solutions in the coming years by taking advantage of the existing bilateral and multilateral national programs.
